There are only a few things in life I am more passionate about than sports. That’s why I spent the first part of my career as a television sportscaster, last working at KOMO in Seattle. So, when I was contacted by Level the Field Sports to cover their non-profit organization at the Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards, I was excited about the opportunity to jump back into one of my ultimate passions.

Level the Field Sports

As described on their website, Level the Field Sports is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships and financial assistance to children in grades kindergarten through 5th grade who are unable to play team sports due to socioeconomic barriers. It’s a fantastic mission made even more incredible by the two founders, Jacob and Justin Rivera.

The Rivera brothers are now teenagers, but they started the non-profit when they were just 8 and 9 years old. Their efforts and that youthfulness are the reasons the two were honored with the Wayne & Anne Gittinger Youth Inspiration Award at the 91st annual Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards at the Seattle Convention Center.

Documenting the LTFS Event Experience

Level the Field Sports asked my video production and content creation company to document the boys’ experience on event night. I was there from the moment the boys first arrived and walked onto media row to receiving the award and the celebration that followed.

On top of covering the event with Level the Field Sports, my past experience as a sportscaster helped me play an active role in Jacob and Justin Rivera’s experience at the Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards. I helped introduce the founders to media members and local sports legends, including Hope Solo, Christian Roldan, and Marcus Trufant. I was definitely back in my element.

Level the Field Sports Video Project

Working with Level the Field Sports was a rewarding experience for me. It allowed me to feel like I was back in the sports mix for a night. I saw old friends and contacts that I hadn’t seen in years. But above all of that, I believe in the Level the Field Sports mission. As a volunteer coach for local youth sports organizations, I see that unnecessary barriers to entry exist on many levels. These two young men are doing something about it, and I think that’s incredible. It’s a pleasure to help the cause receive attention.

In an email from Jacob and Justin Rivera’s mom, who was my contact for the video project, she said about the video, “This is absolute perfection, Tim. Thank you so much! We’re so glad we got to work with you.” Their father told me that the video gives him “chills” every time he watches it. It was an unforgettable night for Level the Field Sports and for me personally as well.
