For the first time since 1995, the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Seminar is coming to Seattle in 2024. It took plenty of time, effort, and hard work by the Washington School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) to get the conference back in the Pacific Northwest. And to help the host chapter generate buzz for the upcoming event, we created a fun hype video with them.

And the hype video needed to hit just the right tone. WSPRA members lobbied NSPRA for years to bring the national seminar back to Seattle. But, Washington is often viewed as too far away. That’s why the national seminar is usually held in places like Chicago or St. Louis. That was a big reason for the delayed return to the Emerald City.

Much to the delight of WSPRA, NSPRA finally agreed to hold the national seminar in Seattle/Bellevue. And at the end of every national seminar, the upcoming host chapter shares a presentation and hype video to generate excitement for the next year’s event.

That’s where our Seattle video production and content creation company came in.

It was important for us to understand the process and the story of WSPRA’s efforts to bring the national seminar back to Seattle. That is the heart and the meat of our hype video. We also played into Washington being too far away, while also hitting on Seattle stereotypes — like sleepless nights, coffee, and grunge. Building and building, we reach the climax of the video at the very end.

As for the visuals — that was the easy part. Anyone who lives in Washington knows this is the greatest place in the world. It’s stunningly beautiful. As for Seattle, there is no shortage of things to do and see. So we tapped into videographers in Eastern and Southern Washington to help capture content, and we also spent a full shoot day bounding around Seattle collecting b-roll for the video.

The voiceover is the other key element to our hype video. It needed just the right tone. And for that we turned to former KOMO news anchor Dan Lewis — who also happens to be my dad.

The hype video debuted at the end of the 2023 NSPRA Seminar in St. Louis. And at the end of the presentation, the crowd gave a standing ovation. When posted on social media after, the hype video received rave reviews. Sultan School District said on Facebook, “This video ROCKS!” While a commenter on Instagram simply called it “incredible.”

This was a fun video project for us. We were able to showcase the state and city that we love so much in a really neat way. Plus, I got to work with my family. My dad provided the voiceover and my wife Tove Tupper is a proud WSPRA member (and one of the many who worked hard to get the national seminar back in Seattle). I know what it means to the organization and I feel like that gave me everything I needed to create a video that matched their effort and excitement.
