A patient testimonial video makes for incredible content creation. When created properly, they should include high quality visuals and audio, and impactful storytelling. And in the patient success story of Chester Kitt and Kerecis, the video also includes a very unique medical treatment.
There are all sorts of innovations in the world of healthcare. Some are extremely high tech and others are not. In the case of Kerecis, their medical device is hardly a “device.” It’s fish skin. Yes, the skin of Atlantic cod caught in the wild near Iceland. And what used to be a byproduct of the fishing industry is now healing burns and wounds all over the world.
Kerecis came to the rescue when Marysville resident Chester Kitt felt like he might be out of options.
Kitt was diagnosed with diabetes in 1994. Now in his 70s, he’s battled the disease for many years. And it hasn’t been an easy road. A few years ago, Kitt got gangrene in his foot. Surgeons urged him to have his foot amputated. But Dr. Mikhail Burakovskiy of Integrative Foot & Ankle Centers had a different idea.
“We know statistically that most diabetics will develop a wound that can lead to amputation and a loss of life,” said Dr. Burakovskiy during our patient testimonial video interview.
Dr. Burakovskiy and Kitt decided to only amputate part of the foot. It was a long shot but the surgery was a success. But the procedure left a debilitating wound in Kitt’s foot. For three years, they tried everything to heal Kitt’s wound. But even the most advanced treatments weren’t closing the quarter-sized hole.
“Having to see him with the walker or the cane, the wheelchair, or crawling on his knees from the hallway to the kitchen to get something to eat,” said Sarah Kitt, Chester’s wife. “That does a lot to you mentally.”
“I thought I was through,” said Chester during our patient testimonial video interview. “I’m not going to be able to ride my motorcycle. I’m not going to be able to fish. Sometimes I looked down there like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to even get out of bed.'”
And then Kitt was introduced to Kerecis fish skin. After just a few treatments, Kitt’s wound was fully healed.
“It was like a miracle,” Dr. Burakovskiy said. “Kerecis allowed the wound to heal from the inside and outside at the perfect rate where it closed the wound fast. It was exhilarating to see how the wound shrinks in front of your eyes.”
Kitt is now back to his normal life. He’s riding his motorcycle, fishing, and taking walks around the neighborhood with his wife.
“I have been the happiest person in my life,” said Kitt. “I can go and do anything I want. We can live like we want. I’m healed from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet.”
And as rewarding as it is for Kitt, it’s also rewarding for Dr. Burakovskiy.
“Every year that I can give a patient to keep their limb, to enjoy their life, to do what they want to do. That’s what this is all about,” he said.
“I feel like a kid in a candy store,” said Kitt with a huge smile on his face. “Open the door. Here we go.”
